Diet and Hair Loss (cont)

You’ll have noticed that many of the ingredients that are essential for healthy hair relate to the production and supply of oxygen and red blood cells around the body. Consuming too much caffeine, alcohol, sugar and nicotine can have detrimental effects to that production, so should be avoided. Easier said than done in many cases, but it comes down to priorities and what is more important to you. If you are a large consumer of those substances, and are losing your hair, then at the very least you do have a choice.

While it’s rare for dietary deficiencies to be solely responsible for hair loss, it can be a major factor in exacerbating the effects of other factors that induce hair loss. Following a simple, healthy diet as laid out by the Food Pyramid Guideline can reverse these nutritional causes. Keep your calories from saturated fats low, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and watch your intake of alcohol, caffeine and nicotine - and your hair will thank you for it.
